They oversold themselves. Arena League does not insist it is on a par with the NFL.

The XFL did one thing right. They got a major Network involved. Unfortunately it was back when the NFL used only three networks of four. So their network was the odd man out and everyone experienced in football went to the other network. So they had inferior broadcast teams filled with guys that had never filmed a football game. TV angles are better on cable access for High School games.

Maybe they learned, but after the first week it was irrelevant.

It was a victim of having the schedule pushed up a year. That forgettable season was supposed to be a time where the coaching staffs, front office, etc. were going to be built, with player acquisition and play to begin after getting a foundation.

From what was stated at the time, the head coaches were surprised when the schedule was condensed. Also, Vince McMahon has failed in every endeavor outside of wrestling (WBF, NYC restaurant, Ali-Inoki North American promoter), and the concept was quickly dismissed by most football fans.

And – let’s face it – these players were mostly castoffs of the NFL, CFL, AFL and the NFL development league. But NBC was desperate to get some type of football on the air….which ultimately doomed everything.

The Arena League doesn’t try to sell itself as a competitor to the NFL. Vince McMahon tried to sell the XFL as an “alternative” to the NFL, but with rosters composed almost entirely of subpar players and has-beens, similar to the old USFL. But at least the USFL drafted and signed a lot of college stars and lured some big-name players from the NFL. Not ENOUGH, obviously, but the XFL couldn’t even do that.

Because XFL was wrestling disguised as football. They wrestled over the ball instead of a coin flip, the cheerleaders got WAY too much attention and Vince McMahon owned them.
